In a re-occurring nightmare you find yourself running blindly like a panicked horse, demolishing everything in your path. You’re being chased by a monster and you’re terrified. You don’t know who the monster is. What you do know is it scares you beyond any rational thought or action.
Yet, what if, for an instant, you realize you’re dreaming and in this moment of outside reflection, you find the courage necessary to stop and face your monster. What is it that faces you? How do you feel? Is it what you imagined? Is there a dialogue?
Facing fears, in order to live a happier life, is a regular theme I help people with at Silver Horse Retreat in Southern California. ‘The feeling is the healing’ is something I quoted in a recent interview. Being able to access and resonate with deep, rooted feelings, in real time, is a way to disrupt continual patterns of dysfunctional, chaotic experiences and behavior, like the re-occurring nightmare.
When we can face our monster in a safe, and sacred space, with a skilled facilitator, willing to accompany us to dark and unknown territories, the results are profound and life changing. We become empowered, integrated and happier. But, and a big ‘but’; we need to have;
willingness to accept change
presence to connect to our feelings
trust to listen and accept our body’s innate wisdom
courage to release the ways in which we’ve managed to avoid and deny our monster.
